Never entered a climbing comp? It's probably much easier to get involved than you think! Here's our handy guide.
Thinking about entering our SIX comp but not sure what the deal is? Here's a quick rundown:
All competitors get a free comp t-shirt included with their entry fee. Already worth the ticket price :)
We often get people saying things like "well, I've climbed for a few months but I'm not good enough to enter a comp". Not true! Our Fun Comp is graded just for you, with all climbs coming in at between grades 3A-5C (or in other words, a combination of levels from our Seagulls, Pink Tigers, Mints, Greys, and Watermelons). If you spend your time normally climbing these sorts of colours, you'll have a great time.
Also, new this year we have two different sessions available for the Fun Comp. The morning session at 10am runs alongside the juniors, and will probably the quieter comp of the two. The afternoon session at 3pm runs alongside the Open Comp and is ideal if you want to stick around to watch the Showcase Finals at the end of the day - although even if you do the morning session you can always come back later to watch these.
For stronger climbers, the Open Comp has climbs going up to about 7B - but the grades there still start at 4A so if you're a grade 5/6 climber this would be perfect for you.
You will get given a scoresheet with each of the climbs labelled on the side, and then you go around and try and climb them all. If you get the climb first time you get 10 points, if you get it second time you get 7 points, third time is 3 points and if you get it on any further attempt you get 1 point. You score yourself as you go round, or you can get someone to help, up to you - it's all based on honesty so there's no-one "judging" you as you climb. People are generally really supportive and share tips with each other about how to get up the tricky problems.
At the end, when you've done all you can or the time has run out, you add up your total score, write it on the sheet and hand it in at the front desk. We'll then publish results and you can see how you did! The Finals at 7.30 will be for the top scoring competitors in the Open Comp, where they will battle against each other on three Finals problems (these get judged and everyone watches) to see who wins the overall male and female title, it's really fun to watch. At the end we'll give out prizes, including several random prizes to those that handed in a score sheet and stayed till the end.
As well as the climbing comp itself, we'll have some yoga sessions going on, delicious food from the Vegan Earthlings, some petanque to be played on our outside court (if the sun's out!), a licenced bar, and more. Guaranteed fun day out.
Earlybird tickets are £5 cheaper than paying on the day - book yours now through the link below if you're interested!
