Accessibility matters at Boulder Brighton

Our accessibility aims

We want to overcome as many barriers as we can to getting involved with bouldering. We hope that whatever someone’s gender, size, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic background we will be able to facilitate indoor bouldering and all it has to offer! See below for various measures we already have in place - if you think we could do better, please let us know.

We pride ourselves on maintaining a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, so we encourage you to get in touch if you would like to give climbing a go and we'll see if there's a way to make that happen. We have successfully run sessions accommodating various different needs in the past and we're always happy to try. If you have something in particular in mind, drop us a line on [email protected] and we'll see what we can do.

Bouldering doesn't involve ropes and harnesses and there's always the risk of falling. In some cases it may be beneficial to try roped climbing in the first instance rather than bouldering - although we don't have roped climbing facilities at our centre, we're very happy to talk through the options and we can recommend other local options for you to try climbing in a roped environment.

About us

Since opening in 2013 Boulder Brighton has provided a safe space for beginners and experienced climbers alike to come and participate in our favourite sport. We have a fantastic site with over 1,000 square metres of floor space, boulders for all abilities and tons of exciting and challenging bouldering structures. We also have a fitness space upstairs, training area for experienced climbers and a friendly café with locally roasted coffee available and locally baked cakes. Our aim has always been to create a relaxed and friendly space where our community can hang out, climb and socialise. For more about us, see our About Us page.

How to find us

Our address, directions and contact details can all be found on our Contact page.

We do have a free car park but spaces can be tough to find on a busy day. We have 2 x disabled parking spaces; if these are taken when you arrive please come to the desk and we will try to make one available for you. Please note our neighbouring businesses sometimes have empty spaces - unfortunately we are not able to use these spaces so please leave them clear.

There are local taxi services you can use: Brighton Taxis are reliable and can be contacted on 01273 204060.

Costs and Discounts

We offer discounted rates for students, NHS staff, the unemployed and carers with an Amaze Compass/Carers card. The price per session varies depending on whether instruction is involved, or how regularly you're coming climbing - see our prices page for details on our various rates.

Using the centre

When you arrive please come straight to the desk even if you are not climbing. Let us know if you have any specific accessibility needs. If you are able please let us know in advance so we can make sure we have made it as easy for you as possible.

Our check in desks can be found as soon as you come through the doors and our lovely staff will help you out if it is your first time here at the centre.

If you have any worries or questions, we promise we won't find them silly, you can always ask!

Before you can climb or supervise, we need you to complete a centre registration and have a quick safety briefing from a team member. You can do this online (click here) or in person on one of the ipads at the centre. Even if you’re an experienced climber or member of another climbing gym we will need one for our site. Under 18s must have their registration completed by a parent or guardian who is over 18.

Wheelchair Access

We have an accessible ramp on the right-hand side of the building, if you follow the path round by the bike parking you will see the door on your left, it is often open but if it is closed please use the intercom at the door, it will put you through to the front desk. If this doesn’t work, please call 01273 422408

Toilets

We have an accessible WC on the ground floor which can be found in the climbing area. Our downstairs toilets are gender neutral as are our showers. This space can also be used as an accessible changing room. There is a red cord on the right-hand side of the toilet in case of emergency or if you need assistance.

Changing Rooms & Lockers

We have lockers in the climbing area and upstairs in both changing rooms. There are gender neutral shower cubicles upstairs. Upstairs we have changing rooms, if you need an accessible changing room the accessible WC inside the bouldering area can be used.

Music

We play music in the centre but please come to the front desk and ask for it to be turned off or turned down if this helps us interact with you more clearly.

Induction Video

Our main induction video has subtitles to aid our deaf climbers and it has a voiceover that contains all the information for our blind or partially sighted visitors. You can view it on YouTube (click here)

Getting around Boulder Brighton

Safe walking areas

As you will find out in your safety briefing, we ask that you don’t walk on the mats unless you are about to climb something as you will be in a fall zone. Please stay off the red mats when you are not climbing.

Evacuation information

In the event of a fire the assembly point is the FRONT CAR PARK. Assistance for any person needing it to exit the building will be provided. All visitors and staff must exit the building immediately.

There are two sets of stairs from the ground floor to the first floor, there is emergency lighting in the event of a power cut.

Staff

Our friendly team is made up of Boulder Brighton's Directors, Duty Managers, Instructors and Centre Staff. We are all here to help with any questions or worries.

There is always a trained first aider on site in case of injury or accident. Please make sure you let us know if you hurt yourself, so that we can provide assistance and make sure there's no undue risk to anyone else.

You can see more about our current staff team on our Meet the Team page.
