Will Shauna Win?

Will Shauna Win?

Answer... probably!

After Round 5 of the IFSC Bouldering World Cup last weekend in Innsbruck and another gold medal round her neck, GB's Shauna Coxsey is looking good at the top of the series table. But can we start celebrating the series title for her yet? We got stuck into the numbers to find out:

So the answer is... well, probably! Shauna has 437 points so far, from her four golds and one ninth position (1st place gets 100 points, 2nd place gets 80 points... 9th place gets 37 points, etc - there's a full list of scores per place on the IFSC website if you look really hard). Athletes get to pick their top six results from seven events over the series, so she's still in with a shout of a perfect series score of 600.

Her closest rival at the moment is Miho Nonaka from Japan, who is in overall second place with 319 points. Even if Miho gets gold in the remaining two events, her maximum possible score is 495, just 58 points more than Shauna has in the bank already. One third place finish for Shauna from the final two events, or two top 5 finishes*, would put her in an unbeatable position regardless of anyone else's scores. It would take a pretty major upset at this stage for Shauna to get knocked off the top spot, but here's hoping she finishes the season with a flourish.

Meanwhile there are two other GB women in the top 15, Michaela Tracy and BB-supported Leah Crane! It's already been a great year for the GB women's team, fingers crossed we can see a finals appearance for Leah or Michaela to finish things off.

In the Men's category, meanwhile, things are much tighter at the top, with Tomoa Narasaki leading the way with 298 points, just 9 points clear of second placed Kokoro Fujii. Amazingly, it's still all to play for here and there are enough points still available that any one of the men currently in the top 15 could theoretically take the series title:

For the GB Men, Tyler Landman is currently leading the way in 16th place, with Dave Barrans (25th) and Nathan Phillips (37th) also featuring in the lead tables.

Looking forward to the last two events of the season, with Vail on 10th/11th June next on the list!
