Brighton win SCUB 2017

Congrats to the University of Brighton for winning our annual student battle

This year's South Coast Universities Bouldering comp (SCUB) and student boulder party was a great success. This year the format was tweaked slightly, with most students joining in with a (mostly!) non-competitive selection of boulder skills challenges, throwing some great shapes on the wall and having lots of fun. A massive crowd then gathered to watch Sussex take on Brighton uni in the SCUB Finals 2017! Each university submitted their best three climbers, with at least one female competitor in the group, and had two specially set finals problems each to tackle in front of the spectators. Team-mates were allowed to encourage each other and suggest beta, which seemed to help - particularly on problem 1A on which Jenny Landelle from Brighton found some unexpected, hard, crimpy beta to dodge the tricky co-ordination move that everyone was finding tough. There was some excellent climbing all round, but Brighton proved the stronger team on the night and got to hold aloft the SCUB trophy for the second time.

The finalists were:
Brighton: Gene Harton, Dan Sykes, Jenny Landelle
Sussex: Alex Blair, Dan Harrison, Georgie Barnett

And the final scores were:
Brighton: 6 tops in 18 attempts (6 bonuses in 17 attempts)
Sussex: 3 tops in 7 attempts (3 bonuses in 7 attempts)
